Gifted And Talented Secondary

Bridgemary Cluster – KS2 Gifted & Talented Programme 2012-13

After a successful pilot in 2011-12 the Gosport SSP and Bridgemary School PE Department would like to continue with the implementation of a gifted and talented programme for pupils in upper KS2 – Years 5 & 6.

The programme will include a scheduled identification period in the Autumn term linked to the criteria document below, plus opportunities for the pupils to attend activity sessions over at Bridgemary school, which could include activities such as, trampolining, climbing, Ultimate frisbee and softball. These would be schedule across the Spring and Summer terms.

The identified Y5 & 6 pupils will also receive support from the G&T pupils and Young Ambassadors at Bridgemary School during these activity sessions, where they will be able to share their experiences in their chosen sport and about their time at Bridgemary.


Physical Education Gifted and Talented Identification Criteria (KS2)

Definition of Gifted and Talented (Whole College)

Gifted learners are defined as “those who have abilities in one or more subjects in the statutory school curriculum other than art and design, music and PE;”

Talented learners are defined as “those who have abilities in art and design, music, PE, or performing arts such as dance and drama.”

What does Gifted and Talented mean in PE?

There are three routes by which a young person can be recognised as gifted and talented and placed on a school’s G&T program;

By being

 
  • Gifted in PE, through a multi-skills non-sport specific route,
  • Talented in a particular sport as identified through competition and/or identified by NGB as part of talent development programme.

Gifted and Talented Students in Physical Education-

 

Students are identified in lessons as being Gifted and Talented in Physical Education if they demonstrate a very high level of competence across the following five areas:

 
  • Creative
  • Physical
  • Social
  • Cognitive
  • Personal

Students who appear to be demonstrating the potential to be Gifted and Talented will be assessed against the Multi Ability Profile. Teachers will observe and assess selected students performance and award a score from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) in each category.

Students require a total score of the following to be recognised as Gifted and Talented:

 

Year 6 = 35+ averaging 7 per ability

Gifted and Talented Pupils in Sport/Dance-

 

Students identified as being Gifted and Talented in Sport/Dance will be those who perform outside of school, at county level or above – or could if circumstances permitted.

Students may be identified as being Gifted and Talented for both Physical Education and Sport/Dance.
